Pet Obsession:
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) estimates
that there are now approximately 78.2 million dogs and 86.4 million cats in the
US. That means there is a dog or cat for
every two people. This, of course, does
not include other pets like horses, hamsters, and exotic animals.
What is this obsession that people have about pets?
I understand that they provide companionship for many people. But is this a luxury we can afford in a world
with more than seven billion people? These cats and dogs live better and eat more
than a significant number of the world’s population of human beings. According to a new market report published by
Transparency Market Research, the global pet food market
was worth USD 58.6 billion in 2011. How
many people could be fed with $58.6 billion dollars?
